McCreary Central High School is finding new ways to support career goals through industry internships and apprenticeships.  Seniors who have earned 3 credits in their declared Career & Tech pathways are considered to be "preparatory." This qualifies students to seek industry certification through assessments such as Medicaid Nurse Aide (MNA), Phlebotomy, ASE, NCCER, Auto CAD, ASK, Photoshop, NOCTI, and the optional End-of-Program Assessment.  Additionally, students may seek to partner with local businesses to conduct internships or apprenticeships.

These opportunities to provide valuable workplace experiences to support student success as they graduate to adult life after high school.  The programs are part of the school's #BeyondTheDiploma initiative which began in August of 2017.  Community business owners and service groups are seeing dividends in working closely with our Seniors!  Requests from other districts for additional information are on the rise as our programs are heralded across the Commonwealth.

Recently, Kentucky Commissioner of Education, Dr. Wayne Lewis, visited McCreary Central High School to witness the program in action.  During his visit, he met with teachers, students, and administrators to hear about the shared vision of transitioning career-ready students to successful careers in our community.  Dr. Lewis referenced McCreary Central High School during his State of Education address for our outstanding #WhatwillyoubeKentucky stories.  Mckayla Hamlin, Evan Jones, and Kaitlyn Keith were all featured in the state social media campaign.

Several graduates have enjoyed access to special partnerships through the Lake Cumberland Area Development District (LCADD) and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.  These are limited-contract, paid positions which offer financial benefits and introduce employers to potential long-term, skilled employees who are recent graduates of our school.

Do we have challenges?  Yes. Yes, we do.  We accept them as the chance to stake claim to new territory.  You are invited to visit our campus to learn more about our awesome students and our innovative practices!
