Virtual Program

 

McCreary County Virtual Academy

Purpose

The McCreary County Virtual Academy provides students in grades 3–12 with a flexible, student-centered educational option designed to meet a variety of learning needs while maintaining the high academic standards of McCreary County Schools. The Virtual Academy offers a rigorous online learning experience that allows students to complete coursework outside of the traditional classroom while remaining connected to their school district.

The program is intended for students who are motivated, responsible, and capable of working independently in a structured online environment. Through standards-aligned curriculum, certified teachers, and ongoing academic support, students are expected to develop the skills necessary for academic success, personal responsibility, and postsecondary readiness.

The Virtual Academy is not intended to be a self-paced program without accountability. Students are expected to actively participate, communicate regularly with teachers, meet academic deadlines, and maintain satisfactory progress throughout the school year.

 

Enrollment

Enrollment in the McCreary County Virtual Academy is available to students in grades 3–12 who reside within the McCreary County School District. Students outside the district, including homeschool and private school students who enroll in McCreary County Schools, may also be considered for placement.

Because virtual learning is not the best educational setting for every student, admission into the program is a selective process. Placement decisions are made to ensure that the virtual environment is an appropriate educational fit for each student.

To be considered for enrollment, students and parents/guardians must:

  • Complete the official Virtual Academy application through the district website or submit a paper application to the student's school.
  • Demonstrate that the student possesses the motivation, independence, organizational skills, and time-management abilities necessary to succeed in an online learning environment.
  • Agree to comply with all Virtual Academy policies, procedures, attendance requirements, and academic expectations.

Applications are reviewed by a committee that may include the school principal, school counselor, virtual principal, and other district personnel as appropriate. Enrollment is limited based on program capacity, and placement decisions made by the committee are final.

Students receiving special education services may participate in the Virtual Academy only after approval by the student's Admissions and Release Committee (ARC). The ARC must determine that virtual instruction is the student's least restrictive educational environment and that appropriate services can be provided.

Students requesting placement due to medical or mental health concerns may be required to submit documentation from a licensed medical or mental health provider supporting the request for virtual instruction.

Acceptance into the Virtual Academy is considered conditional. Students must continue to meet all academic, attendance, and participation requirements throughout the school year in order to remain enrolled in the program.
